About
The MANN is engaged in 3D digitization projects of part of its collections, to be completed in the coming years, aimed at the purposes of protection (implementation of restoration documentation, monitoring storerooms, loans for exhibitions, etc.), dissemination (implementation of the online database), and enhancement (creation of interactive virtual applications).
The VWHL, in continuation of its previous projects, aims to develop a methodology of digital documentation of cultural heritage of various kinds, both two-dimensional (frescoes and iconographic material), and three-dimensional (sculptures, ceramics, and objects of everyday use), and the digital relocation of these works in reconstructed virtual contexts, according to philological criteria. In this regard, it will use as a case study a selection of 400 objects preserved at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, with particular emphasis on the precious works of art contained in deposits not accessible to the public, which will be digitized and described according to such methodology, by 2027.
MANN and VWHL will jointly determine a list of works of significant historical, archaeological, and documentary importance that will be digitized. The selected works will include 400 objects preserved at the MANN, with particular emphasis on valuable works of art contained in storage areas not accessible to the public. The 3D files produced in this initiative will be available for use by both the VWHL and the MANN. The digitalization itself will be funded by the VWHL while the MANN will facilitate the preparation of the various sculptural objects for 2D or 3D shooting.
